Optimal harvesting strategy for hairtail, Trichiurus Lepturus, in Korea Sea using discrete-time age-structured model


要旨:

Hairtail, Trichiurus Lepturus, is a major fishery resource in Korea and so has
been occupying a large portion of the catch for a long time. However, since the
1980s, the catch has fallen sharply and the minimum catch was recorded in
2012, resulting in the decrease of fishing profit. Indiscriminate overfishing of
immature hairtails as well as environmental changes caused the reduction of
hairtail resources. Thus, there is a need for a fishing plan that can manage
hairtail resources while maximizing economic profits. In this study, we aim to
suggest the fishing plan with a mathematical model. By considering
characteristics of hairtails in Korea Sea, we use a discrete-time age-structured
model of hairtails including an environmental factor. In order to find the fishing
plan, a discrete-time optimal control problem is solved via Pontryagin's
maximum principle. Based on numerical simulations, in the sense of
conservation and economic profit, the best is not a conservation plan to
strongly limit fishing of hairtails, but an optimal plan obtained from the control
problem. These findings provide a basis for the fishing policy of hairtails in the
future.
